Summit History:

The region passed from Indian to Colonial possession by purchase in 1664 as

part of the Elizabethtown Purchase. Summit's earliest settlers came here

about 1710 and found a true paradise. The area was abundant in timber and

wildlife; it boasted a fertile valley for growing wheat and corn and was close to

the Passaic River. In 1837, the railroad came over the "The Summit" hill,

whose name was later shortened to Summit. After the Civil War, Summit

blossomed as a summer resort area for New Yorkers because of its crisp,

clean mountain air and convenient proximity to NYC. Many visitors came and

built extensive summer estates and eventually became permanent residents.

Statistics don't always adequately represent the whole picture. Many qualities of

an excellent educational system cannot be measured, but are an integral part of the

educational experience. These include school spirit, teacher enthusiasm, parental and

themselves on having all of these and on continuing to graduate students who are well

prepared to enter the world as critical thinkers and contributing members of society.

Implementation of the state core curriculum content standards, approved by the

State Board of Education on May 1, 1996, has become one of the district's priorities.

The standards are in areas of the arts, comprehensive health and physical education,

language arts literacy, mathematics, science, social studies and world languages. An

accompanying set of workplace readiness standards addresses skills that cut across

these academic content areas. These include: career preparation: information

technology and other tools: critical thinking, decision making and problem solving: selfmanagement:

and safety principals. The district is in the process of reviewing and

revising all curricula to insure that all students achieve or exceed defined results. In
